College Days Photographs
This is a small part of a larger collection of photos sent in or ones found in the Balmain Teachers College archives held by the University of Technology Sydney. There has not been room to include the names of all those in group photos. This should not stop you from identifying many of those in the photographs. If you have old photographs of college days, please scan them and send me a copy at [email protected] or by post. I can add them to this page.
(Above) The 'Invicibles' or at least they look that way: the 1957 BTC football team consisting of 1956-57 and 1957-58 students. If anyone has a complete list of the names, I'll happily add them here.

National Fitness Camp, Broken Bay, 1956. There are students from 1955-56 and 1956-57 and of course George Turnbull in the middle of the front row was always there. It may be Freddie Frame right at the back, between Bev Scott and Betty Payne.
At the 1956 intercollegiate games between Balmain and Bathurst, Jan Heath plays bagpipes for a welcome at Birchgrove oval.
Those in the photo above are, from the top: Jan Ball, Jan Wilson, Margaret McKimm, Jan Taylor, unknown female, Cedric Bayliss and Fay Odgers. Cedric's dog's name is also unknown. Yes, there is a dog there. The photo was taken on the steps of one of the huts at Broken Bay NFC. Bayliss was later Director of the National Fitness & Recreation Service.
Women's basketball team victorious at the 1958 intercollegiate. Photo taken at Birchgrove Oval. Front row L-R: Marion Austin, Jan Maunsell, Margaret Frazer and Pam? Andrews. No names are known for those in the back row.
This photo taken early in 1957, shows some of the women students from the 1957-58 intake. These all have names, although Norma Nicholl probably doesn't want to be called Norman.

The 2 photographs below were taken in 1956 of Section 101 and Section 102 of the 1956-57 intake. The weather is cool judging by the clothing, but none of the students are wearing college blazers, so the photos were probably taken in April or May but for what purpose is uncertain. It was said that photos like these were displayed in the lecturers' staff room to help them learn students' names. This could be so because the photos have all suffered from exposure to light. All the names are correct, except that Graeme Shaw's name is omitted from the middle row of the first photo.
